Occasionally I do, but most of the time I've started to come up with a melody of something which I think is going to be a song and then I get some words and β
And then it's sort of just fumbling around in the dark until something happens.
And then you sort of get on a lead for a story or a song or a lyric.
You sort of follow your hunches.
But you don't know what you're doing until you're in the middle of it.
No, generally I don't know.
So some of my most popular songs are ones that I wouldn't have thought would be a hit.
How to Make Gravy was, I thought, well, that's an okay, you know, we like playing the song.
I knew it was a song that we liked to play but it didn't have a chorus, it was set in prison and it didn't really get much commercial radio play.
But it just sort of built up over the years.
And another one like that is from Little Things, Big Things Grow, which I wrote with Kev Carmody.
That's like a seven-minute song, so I thought, well, that's not really going to get played on the radio very often.
And that sort of built slowly too.
Sometimes you can think, oh, I reckon that could go okay and it could become popular, but I'm probably wrong most of the time.
Easter eggs.
It's a little Easter egg.
I did.
I went to the concert.
Did you?
Oh, I loved it.
