I came to the book after working on a screenplay for a while.
And so I spent a couple of years not writing fiction.
And I got quite anxious about it.
And when I finished the screenplay, I imagined screenplay writing as being easier than fiction writing, but it turned out to have all kinds of...
Incredibly complicated restrictions.
And I was really eager to get back into writing.
But I went down a few kind of false paths before I got to the bee sting.
I decided there's three different ideas and I couldn't decide which one I wanted to do.
One of the ideas was kind of the easiest idea to write, which I thought was the one I would go for, was going to be like a romantic comedy set in Trinity College in Dublin.
And there's going to be a boy from Dublin and a girl from like a Midlands town called Cass.
And I did a huge amount of prep for it.
I plotted out all of the scenes, the whole arc of the story I had down.
But when I came to write it, I found that when I actually put pen to paper, it just didn't interest me.
It takes so long to write a book, and it's such a marathon.
that you really have to be, there has to be something about it that is kind of keeps you invested and keeps you excited.
And this sort of a comedy didn't feel like emotionally to resonate with where I was at that point.
But I really liked this character of Cass and I was kind of intrigued by her.
And I started to kind of think about her backstory.
