So I'd written them out a section and I thought like, wow, I'm really proud of that section.

I think that section works.

But as soon as I emailed it to my editor, I immediately thought, what if it doesn't work?

I have no idea if it works or not.

I'm not a 35-year-old.

I could have just got it completely wrong.

So it's very gratifying to hear that it sounds authentic and especially that it's not condescending.

Yeah.

So that's where I started.

I'd written a book about teenage boys in a boarding school called Skippy Dies.

And I really felt like, you know, that particular well was empty, you know, but I was really interested.

There was one teenage girl character in that book and just kind of she had a brief chapter of her own.

And I thought there was so much going on there, like a teenage girl's life.

I mean, there's so many similarities to a boy's life in terms of the vulnerability you feel and your sense of just lostness, trying to find a footing for yourself or trying to find an identity that will carry you forward.

But there's all kinds of things that are different.

So Cass, she's a bright girl.

But at the same time, she feels very insecure in herself.

She's got this friend called Elaine who seems perfect.

You know, Elaine, like everything, all her clothes fit her perfectly.
