If you want to be one of the best leagues in the world, you need to start by being the best league in your own region.

But Garth knows better than anybody, he's worked in this forever, what the league needs to do.

So we spoke with Garth Lagoway about his take on the roster rules and the changes that maybe need to come there.

I feel bad for Garth.

I'm trying to get him to put all these problems into a relatively short answer.

But the idea here is that MLS has created all of these restrictions that essentially are meant to keep costs down.

And all of these restrictions are creating friction for the league to get better.

You know, it's harder to bring players in.

It's harder to sell the players.

It's hard to convert sales figures into money that you can use to go right back into the roster.

It's harder to sign homegrown players, American players, than it should be.

You can't sign homegrown players from outside of your own market unless you pay for them first.

All of these things that exist in this current system

Don't work toward the simple idea of what do we need to do to put the best possible product on the field?

And what Garth is talking about is simplify the system, make a salary cap ceiling and a floor, no rules within that outside of yes, leaving room for designated players like Messi to come because that's still important.

Otherwise allow the money to just be spent because if you have teams spending $50 million as MLS does right now,

But 45 of that 50 million is focused on two or three players.

That's the problem.

Wouldn't you rather have a team spending $50 million across its entire roster?
