There's their house, Roy and Mandy's house, but then the hostel is a kind of house too, right?
And maybe still thinking about the title and sort of why Fiona chose that title, but it's sort of like maybe the hostel kind of embodies the opposite of the sturdy house with the red door and the family, you know, and the skylight.
And I think Mandy thinks it could even have been the growl of a possum.
So it's not just a girl crying.
There's just something, again, just foreboding and just like, I don't know.
It's almost like there's chaos.
Again, like you were saying, it's almost like they're walking by a beast.
But I also think that there's some sort of odd echo to maybe the idea of a fairy tale where you have people walking and then they stumble upon something, right?
Yeah.
Like whether they're walking in the woods or something and then there's something that's kind of feels out of place is there.
And so when that happens, like what do the characters do, right?
When they stumble upon that.
I was seeing that that's also being interpreted by, or we're seeing it through the lens of the narrator, right?
And so, you know, I think part of her, the way this narrator is sort of telling us the story is that it's very clear that, you know, Roy is attracted to her because she's gorgeous, you know, and kind of in a vulnerable state and maybe he's like turned on by that or, you know.
But then you have to ask, you know, is that an imagination that she's sort of conjured or is that the actual, like, what really happened, right?
And that's sort of a recurring question throughout the story in all its many layers is what really happened.
Yeah, exactly.
She can't know.
And if there are these indications that she was sort of deeply in love with Roy or at least had very strong feelings for him, I think there's a kind of element of jealousy as well, right?
Where they've taken in this person and more than once she mentions, you know, to the reader as a sort of aside, you know, hey, I've slept on that couch too, don't forget.
