And so that's what they did in this experiment is they used that level of 5% carbon dioxide. matched

And they got people to breathe it in. matched

It's a very small study, only about 12 people. matched

but they got people to breathe in these sort of doses of 5%, that's the 100 times concentration, about twice a minute, so about 35 seconds apart. matched

And the idea with this is that it causes the blood vessels in your brain to dilate temporarily, and by making these vessels expand and then they contract again, it starts mimicking the natural motion of the glymphatic system. matched

It's this series of vessels that surround the blood vessels in the brain, all these channels. matched

And we know that it mostly functions when we're asleep. matched

And what they do is they cause this pulsing of fluid and waste to drain out of the brain cells and to flow eventually into your neck and drain away. matched

We know that those processes are really important for draining the proteins that are involved in things like Alzheimer's. matched
