It was to make sure –

that that level of wealth didn't go off the rails and that it didn't turn into a level of political power that could bring down the whole system, which, by the way, is the problem I think we're facing now.

First of all, our tax system taxes wealth less than it taxes work.

That's a problem.

That's an even bigger problem now that AI is coming for jobs because there's basically a thumb on the scale, a subsidy, in effect, from the U.S.

government saying, giving you a little more reason to automate a job than you otherwise would because things like capital gains taxes come in lower than things like income taxes.

Now, wealth tax, which is a property tax by another name,

can be part of the menu of taxes you have to get enough revenue and to make sure that outcomes are fair.

You can argue about where to draw the line.

I think some people have proposals that set it too high.

You can also argue about whether you have to have a wealth tax or whether you can get the job done with capital gains and income and other taxes.

But what we know right now is that our system is so out of whack

that if you are a multi-billionaire, you probably pay a lower percentage of what you make in taxes than if you're a school teacher or a firefighter.

We even, in percentage terms, generally, tax billionaires less than we tax millionaires.

Because, again, of this system that kind of favors wealth.

So the more you have, the more you make and the less it's taxed.

Yeah, again, to me, that's just a variation on the idea of a property tax.

I think it's legitimate.

There are some problems with doing it in practical terms.

Yeah, this is why it's hard, right?
