That was what kind of marked it, you know?
And so I had a conversation with a close and trusted friend.
And I remember part of his reaction was to say, you know, to joke that, like...
You didn't exactly make it easy on yourself because my whole professional life had two parts.
One was being a Navy officer when that could be career ending.
And the other was being an elected official in Indiana, which was well on its way to getting a reputation as maybe the most anti-gay state in the country.
Mike Pence hadn't yet become governor, but he soon would.
On one level, I was at peace with this fact.
But I also knew it could be a career-limiting fact.
So I kept it to myself for a long time.
And then I just hit a point where I couldn't do that anymore.
And then it was time to come out because...
Well, the thing that really put me over the edge was when I was getting ready to deploy to Afghanistan.
I was already in there, but like a lot of people in the reserve, you leave your day job to go when you get called up.
So when you deploy into a war zone, they tell you to write a letter just in case you don't come back, which I did.
And in that process, you're kind of taking stock of your life.
You're thinking about what you want to say to the people you love most if you don't come back.
