More than 150,000 people have been evacuated across France and Spain as intense wildfires continue to burn across parts of both countries.

Spanish officials say a fire raging near the capital Madrid, said to be the worst the region has ever seen, has become impossible for firefighters to control.

The Spanish police say they have arrested a man suspected of triggering one vast fire by using a farm vehicle, despite a ban on heavy machinery in the tinderbox conditions.

Italy has also been battling wildfires this week, with dozens raging on the island of Sicily in recent days.

Last month, the European Commission warned wildfires had started earlier this year and that a fleet of nearly 30 planes and helicopters, as well as 800 firefighters, had been pre-positioned across Europe.
