You wouldn't name another Jewish philosopher necessarily.

Uh or if that's an exaggeration, at least it's certainly true to say that you can't understand Maimonides without understanding the projects that was being undertaken by someone like Al Farabi.

So for me, this is all just one story.

And the reason it's one story is that we're talking about a culture which was multi religious, so multi ethnic, multi religious, spanning a huge geographical and chronological range.

And to me, that is just like a a nice sort of unified story within the broader history of philosophy.

And that was really the story I wanted to tell.

Sure.

Um that's a good question.

So this bit really gets to the heart of the structure of the book.

Um maybe the first thing to say about this is the way that the topic is usually introduced.

So in addition to not thinking about Christian and Jewish philosophers, usually, if you look at histories of uh Islamic philosophy that have appeared before.

They often have focused very much not always, but often have focused very much on the period I'm calling the formative period, which would be up to the eleventh century, maybe the twelfth century.

So a typical picture would be that philosophy in the Islamic world begins with the translation movement, which is like eighth, ninth, tenth century.

uh of the common era.

And then you have this generations-long process of digesting and interpreting Aristotle and other Greek texts.

Um, and then that reaches its sort of double culmination in Avicenna and Averoes.

Averoese dies in 1198, so right at the very end of the 12th century.

And then that's kind of the end of philosophy in the Islamic world.

And this happens, as it were, just in time for the Latin Christian philosophical tradition to take over what they've been doing, translate
