And so this is an early example of a very common phenomenon that the future is already here.
It's just somewhere else, or as William Gibson, the science fiction author, famously said, the future is already here.
It's just not very well distributed.
And so here you start to have this understanding of
relationship between time and space in the context of futurology.
In other words, the future almost pools or is concentrated in these certain areas.
And then the force of those future possibilities somehow emanates or is transmitted from those sites of concentration.
And you can readily see how, for example, technology in the context of 1920s and 1920s,
Industrial production might originate in one place and then start to have an effect elsewhere.
And so it does become
not just possible, but actually essential to be able to predict the future in that context.
And the more technology and centralized power and lots of other things that we associate with modernity.
begin to really change the
Texture of everyday life, the more futurology actually starts to look like a legitimate enterprise, and the more this weather prediction model, which of course is not actual prediction, it's just observation of patterns, starts to actually work effectively.
A great example of this, and one that I particularly love because it's skews a little bit differently than people might expect is trend forecasting.
