This is when you start getting the pulp novels, really well twenties and thirties.

And uh the the garden version of the future is in fact more like what we know now.

If I would write Barton Cities would be another really good example of this.

It's just that they're they're sort of regulated and harmonized and s to some extent utopian and better planned, but they're not drastically different from what we already know.

They're a

natural development from it in the same way that next year's garden will be a natural development from this one's.

Okay.

We're getting on in time here.

We have barely even gotten to the middle of the century, so maybe we should accelerate like the science fiction, you know, mixer in your kitchen.

So what happens in like the sixties and seventies as we approach the present?

Yeah.

So here we're starting to get already into the period of time and where futurology is

m may be starting to suffer from a problem of scale and complexity.

So on the one hand, futurology becomes much more experimental and you might even say avant garde in certain ways.

And on the other, it starts to exert less and less credible hold on

of social imagination, if I could put it that way.

So the two chapters here are called The Lab and the Party.

And again, I juxtapose them.

The lab is sort of the inheritor of the machine instinct and the party is sort of the inheritor of the garden instinct.

So with the lab, I'm talking about research institute, most famously RAND, which stands for research and development, uh, which is out in California and had a tremendous influence on their government.
