I'm actually tempted to pursue the thing about praising Helen because we were just talking about the Sophists and the Sophist Gorgias wrote an encomium of Helen.

But actually, I think it'd be better for our purposes to pick up on a name you've mentioned numerous times, which is Socrates.

Because there's a remarkable thing that we find in a late ancient scholar named Maximus of Tyre, someone else I did not talk a lot about in the podcast, but he did probably come up.

He compares Sappho to Socrates, right?

Can you explain why he did that and say whether there's anything to it?

So Maximus, that case we just discussed, tells us something about the ancient reception of Sappho.

And there's more to say about that, like Plato and Aristotle both mentioned her name explicitly, for example.

But something else you've worked on is the modern reception of Sappho.

So I thought before we stop, we should touch on that.

Obviously, she's mostly seen as a literary figure and maybe as a figure in the history of sexuality.

Is that pretty much the dominant theme in the way she's read?

Is there more to say about her that we should think about as historians of philosophy, especially?
