Tom shared his memories of pre-raven days when most professional botanists flew over Missouri because it was accepted that St.
Louis lacked a significant collection.
At last count, we passed seven million specimens because one man understood how to bring out the best in his peers.
I think two tributes offered a pretty fair synopsis of the value of Peter Raven to all willing to work with him.
I say this is someone who benefited from his friendship and mentorship for fifty years.
I started corresponding with him while a Peace Corps volunteer in El Salvador back in the mid seventies, but we didn't meet until the International Botanical Congress in Sydney in eighty one.
What do I miss about him?
His daughter Kate said it best.
I miss the way he liked people.
