And they conducted the war in the initial months of the war, almost insanely, sending waves of men in bright red trousers to go straight into German gunfire.
The casualties were colossal, and the military effect disastrous.
It was crazy war.
And we got involved in it.

Basically, Russia, with the backing of Austria-Hungary, sorry, Germany, Germany with the backing of Austria-Hungary, wanted to expand eastwards, particularly to what is now Ukraine.
And you can see the shape of the ambition in the 1918 piece of Brest Natosk, which Germany signed with the Bolsheviks, which actually created modern Ukraine, amongst other things.
It was one of the things that it did.
And also it transferred all the Baltic states from Russian to German control and shifted Poland.
That is the crucial.
People think of it being Belgium and France, but that's gone.
The actual cockpit of war in 20th century Europe and now in 21st century remains Ukraine.
This is a hugely important piece of territory, and that's what they were worried about.
