Orbert's father, who was right next to me after all, was having none of that.
It always made me flinch, though.
That sound of leather on leather.
How the sound of it caused the very walls to emit fear like an invisible gas.
Also, the cracking of Father's belt.
It never failed to alert everyone.
How my siblings had hidden under their beds and prayed aloud, thanking God that it wasn't them this time.
Father, he could be scary when he was mad.
I twitched like a tortured spider.
I nodded.
It was the only answer I was capable of.
I poked my head up through the trapdoor.
Light struggled to find its way into the attic.
The one window at the end, which would normally look out over the front of the property, had yellowed over time and neglect.
I clicked on an equally grimed overhead light fixture, casting the whole attic space into a nauseating shade of orange.
Dust motes the size of snowflakes hovered and wafted through the stale, dead air, and a sheet of grey dust covered everything.
That included a brass-bound wooden strongbox under the window, long and more than deep enough to double as a child's coffin, not that it had ever been used as one.
At least, I didn't think it had.
The lock hung loosely, the key jutting straight out of the keyhole.
As for the window in question, yeah, it was pretty bad.
