Why are they doing this?
Labour is soft on crime.
It's fair enough.
That's what oppositions do, even if it's a slightly shameless thing to do.
Reform UK held a press conference earlier in the week to say that they would clear prisons of overseas prisoners by sending them either to their home countries or, for those who could not or were unable to go to their home countries, to prisons in El Salvador.
which has got one of the most notoriously bad human rights records for prisoners
world.
And I'm not quite sure if it would ever happen.
But I mean, I think in the grand scheme of things, the main pressure Burnham faces is over the pressure from the public and the police to do something.
And, you know, he doesn't need other parties telling him he needs to get this done.
Well, the probation office union would argue no, because they're massively overworked.
On Tuesday, they announced an incredibly overwhelming vote in favour of strike action.
I think it was 91% from memory voted in favour.
This is not directly linked to the early release scheme.
It's basically the members saying, and the union saying, there's not enough of us, we're overworked, we just can't properly do the job.
But they were saying in the announcement, the union was saying that the early release scheme adds to the workload.
And it's interesting because a variety of prison unions and prison experts have said
Releasing a prisoner is not easy.
It takes a lot of paperwork.
And this being the prison system is often literally done on pieces of paper.
