And polls suggest this has happened already.
What is going to be more difficult is for the new party to draw in voters from the center-right, to draw in some secular nationalists and some Kurdish voters.
And it does not appear to have done so yet.
Well, Özal is not new to politics at all, had been a longtime member of the CHP before his resignation.
He took over the party in 2023 after general elections that the CHP was expected to do well in, but in which it badly underperformed.
He headed the CHP for three years until May, when he was deposed by court decree.
His biggest achievement came in 2024 when the CHP prevailed over the AK Party in local elections en route to its best result in about half a century.
Now, the court that deposed Özel did so by concluding that the party Congress that had elected him in 2023 had been rigged and replaced him with Kemal Kilic Taroglu, the CHP's former leader.
When Ozel's supporters said they would not abide by the verdict, police stormed the party's headquarters.
Critics see Erdogan's fingerprints all over the court ruling.
Kilistarolu is seen as an opponent that Erdogan can tame.
And indeed, during his previous tenure as head of the CHP, Kilistarolu had guided the party to a string of defeats, including his own loss to Erdogan in the 2023 presidential elections.
Well, the CHP seems to be on its way to obscurity or to becoming something of a political zombie.
Polls suggest that its support has melted down to the single digits.
A new low for the CHP came on July 25th when the party held a ceremony presided over by Mr. Kilistarolu to welcome new members.
