Geological Survey said it happened around 9.46 Friday night in the South Kona area of Hawaii Island.

The epicenter was in an area along the western flank of Mauna Loa.

A magnitude 3.2 aftershock occurred six minutes later.

Residents in the area described feeling violent side-to-side shaking.

Hundreds of miles away on the island of Kauai, people also reported shaking.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said no tsunami was generated by the earthquake.

There have been no reports of major damage.
