In fact, this is one of my favorite things in class that students, especially early in the semester, they don't realize it's happening.

I do a lot of live coding on the fly.

I don't practice.

I don't pre-plan.

I'll just do an example.

Here's how an array works or here's how a method works or something like this.

And I constantly make mistakes.

And then we as the class go through the stack trace from the compiler and debug the mistakes and learn to understand them.

That's an important skill, but it doesn't ever happen if you copy and paste code.

It only happens when you do it by hand.

So when I talk about a pen as the tool, if you take notes on a piece of paper with a pen, just like it's, I don't know, 100 years ago, what are you doing?

You're taking information that's coming into your ears and your eyes.

You're translating it.

You're formatting into the native data type that your brain uses.

Then you're retranslating it out.

through these nerve pulses that go down to your hands and all this.

I take notes that I never read.

I take notes I can't even read because that whole physical act of translating this information space into the physical space, it improves your cognitive uptake, it improves your comprehension, and it makes it stick to you better.

I don't think there's any more important tool than a pen.

It's been the best hour I've spent all day.
