We tend to simplify it into functional units.
So then we'll talk about the midfoot and the forefoot.
It's the toes and the metatarsals that are associated with them, essentially.
What are fat pads?
So underneath our feet, to protect us when we're walking normally, if you reach down and have a feel, you can feel, particularly at the heel, there's a thick, fibrous fat pad.
So it's a complicated structure.
Think of it as a bit like a mattress with coiled columns, spring columns.
Right.
but the springs aren't springs they're fat but there's connective tissue around them which maintains this coil structure which is sort of optimized for shock absorbency and distributing pressure so under our heel you can feel it very obviously under the metatarsal or the forefoot joints you can feel it it's probably not as obvious as it is under your heel but it's there in a healthy foot
So obviously it's at the end of your limb, so the blood supply and the drainage can be quite precarious.
So it's an area of the body where we see plenty of problems.
It's also at the periphery, at the edges.
So it's where the arteries tend to fur up most and can be clogged.
It's susceptible to other diseases like diabetes mellitus, where changes in the soft tissues can really impair blood supply.
Exactly.
So any problems with venous return and we'll tend to see swelling around the ankles, swelling in the feet.
It's called edema in technical parlance.
Very common, very troublesome in people who develop it because it tends to be something that doesn't go away.
If you have painful feet, you can ease the pain by sitting down.
Whereas if you have edema, that just makes it worse.
