And the cultural aspect is extremely important.
We're going to get onto high heels, but there are cultural and societal expectations of the footwear that we wear in certain circumstances and that people want to feel as though their footwear is part of their whole fitting into that social or cultural setting.
And so that can't be ignored.
We know there are characteristics that people are going to find more comfortable and are less likely to cause damage.
So trainer style shoes are probably, if you're going to say best for you, the sorts of characteristics that are in trainers are probably the sorts of characteristics that we would recommend.
They tend to have some heel support, so they'll suit most people.
They tend to be quite cushioning.
They tend to have soft uppers, so they don't cramp the toes as much as a tight leather shoe.
But you can't get away with that in a formal business environment.
Yeah, they are not good for feet.
It's a trade-off between what we know about the functional characteristics of those shoes and the societal and cultural expectations that sit around them.
I mean, I guess it's mostly common sense.
And for most of us, what we should be doing is just keeping them clean.
We know that feet can be smelly and people can consider them unpleasant.
So just looking after them in terms of basic hygiene is just common sense.
The problem we have is that for a lot of people, just looking after them in that common sense way becomes increasingly difficult because of age, obesity, back pain, arthritis or whatever.
So me sitting here and telling you what you should do, you should wash your feet,
with soap and water and then dry them thoroughly including between your toes is all very well for me to say but I'm not telling you anything that you didn't know but if you're 70 years old and your feet have got about three feet further away from your head than they were when you were 17 then me giving you that advice isn't terribly helpful
I'll start with socks and hosiery because that's actually one change that many people could make that would make a big difference to their comfort.
If you've got lumps and bumps and you've got a bit of a loss of the fat pads, then simply changing your socks to sort of terry-toweling sports socks.
