This was really my worst fear.
He found 100% horse meat that was labelled as beef.
It was a naval campaign to start off with.
The idea was to go through the narrows, sail up to Constantinople, Istanbul, and hold them to ransom by saying, we'll blow your city to bits if you don't give in.
The Turks relayed the mines, sank half the fleet, and so they decided they couldn't do that again.
Then they had to take the forts.
And the only way to take the forts is to run across the Gallipoli Peninsula...
And the Turks were watching the preparations, of course, so they didn't really have a surprise.
And they thought they were a superior force.
These were just a Turkish rebel.
Well, they weren't.
The Turks were German-trained.
They were regular soldiers, many of them.
And they were defending their own turf not very far from their capital.
So it was a very tough ask.
There is a debate about whether they should withdraw straight away, and it's decided not to because they might take too many casualties in trying to withdraw, so they stay for a bit.
The Turks then try to force them off.
But this is the First World War, and if you charge machine guns in the First World War, you lose a lot of men.
So in May, the Turks attack our forces and suffer enormous casualties.
So you then have a stalemate for several months.
