Look, surprisingly, even though...
People think that it's a little unknown.
One in 200 Australians this year is going to die from motor neurone disease.
That's 800 Australians.
It's two thirds the national road toll.
This is not an unknown disease.
And it strikes people in their prime of life.
And it robs husbands of wives and wives of husbands and children of their parents, brothers of their sisters, sisters of their brothers.
The devastation of this disease just can't be underestimated.
Yeah, Gordie, my longest surviving patient at the moment is 43 years.
And what we're trying to do is trying to work out what determines long survivorship from short survivorship.
So the quickest I've seen is eight weeks from first symptom to death in a 38-year-old mother of two.
So this disease is like no other.
And we need to try and pick apart what makes people survive longer and why does this disease kill people quicker?
So 10% of motor neurone disease is genetic and it's passed on from parent to child.
And I look after 140 families with inherited motor neurone disease and we're gradually trying to remedy that.
We've got some new genomic therapies that
really dramatically slow and stop the disease and we've got other approaches like IVF and pre-implantation genetic testing such that the next generation doesn't get motor neurone disease and inherited motor neurone disease but that's only 10%.
