The sand gets into the crevices of their armor.
It burns through clothes.
It burns through flesh.
It burns through eyes.
It burns through metal.
And it essentially tortures these men to death, the first and bravest, the toughest of the tough.
And because the Tyrians don't just want to kill Alexander's men, they don't just want to kill the Macedonians.
They want, remember the thing at the start of the siege where the Tyrians didn't just kill Alexander's envoys, they threw them off.
the walls so that their bodies would stay there for days they want the rest of the army to see their best and bravest dying screaming helpless in agony and they want them to look at alexander and see that he cannot save them and he did not save them
So the Macedonians, first off the towers, they scream, they die.
The Tyrians have these little, these gigantic iron hooks, which they send down and they pluck people off the siege towers and they fling them through the air into the sea.
The Macedonians see them, their men like pinwheeling through the air, screaming, falling to their deaths.
And it goes on like that.
wave after wave come up the towers, wave after wave die in agony until Alexander, who hasn't gone over with his men, which makes you think that because he was normally at the front of every attack, at the front of every battle.
This time he doesn't.
That makes you think, well, maybe he knew that something beyond even him was about to happen until eventually Alexander orders the retreat.
The towers pull back.
The Macedonians pull back.
And the mood that night in camp is really, really bleak and really dangerous for Alexander because they've spent months, they've spent over half a year besieging the city and they have got absolutely nothing for it at all.
It is.
