It's almost like the atomic bomb in terms of its transformational effect.
We haven't changed.
It is still true.
The most common causes include stones in the gallbladder that drop down into the bile duct.
The end of the bile passage shares a common mouth with the mouth of the pancreas, and that's where problems can arise.
And alcohol is another leading cause.
Though steadily we're seeing across the world an increase in triglycerides in the blood is another important cause.
Now there are other factors including drugs and calcium levels in the blood and tumors that can also cause pancreatitis, but they're less common than gallstones and alcohol.
So tell me about this research you did.
What we intended to do was find out what does acute pancreatitis look like in Australia?
Who is most affected?
What are the trends?
What are the predominant underlying causes?
When you look at acute pancreatitis, traditionally, because gallstones were something that used to develop after the age of 40, we would see acute pancreatitis in slightly older age groups.
But now we're seeing gallstones developing much earlier in life.
You're seeing metabolic syndrome starting earlier in life.
And so the elevation in triglycerides and the presence of gallstones in younger people
are causing this paradigm shift from a much older population towards a younger population in the prime of their life.
Our study didn't look at obesity per se, but we do know the background about obesity and metabolic syndrome being on the rise in the last few decades.
And I think that would certainly be contributory to the development of gallstones and potentially the risk of acute pancreatitis.
