And the Jerusalem that we're in must constantly evolve.

And so the new birth of freedom is taking the Constitution to a new level

to achieve or better achieve those principles.

I don't think everyone took what we've just said from it.

But I think what it did do, even on the other side, was it articulated some higher purpose in this conflict.

And that helped people to see why they were in this war.

Let's just make a historical point that's obvious but important, right?

Americans, when they are in wars, they fight far better and it's easier to get them to support a war when they know what it's about.

We are not a society that supports going to war for the sake of going to war.

Our entire DNA is to believe that a free world is a world of commerce without war.

That's what we seek.

We don't seek permanent war.

And so if you're going to ask, as Lincoln is, families to send their young sons to go and fight and die in many cases, they have to know what it's about.

And this articulated to people what it's about.

Not everyone agreed, but they knew what this was about.

And you could not say this was Abraham Lincoln's war.

No, this was the war for the unions.

I agree.

I think it's a message of struggle.

These were both men who had lived through very difficult circumstances.
