We as historians have to not be anachronistic and not try to define an earlier period by a later period.

Yeah, I think John F. Kennedy's inaugural is really important.

I don't think it's of these three, but it has a resonance.

I think that's a speech where the resonance is greater than the quality of the speech itself.

But if we're historians, people remember that speech, right?

I just said it and you remember the phrase, pay any price, bear any burden, right?

So I think that speech has to be up there.

I also think Reagan's speech when he goes to the Normandy battlefields and articulates what World War II was about in 1984, the 40th anniversary of the Normandy landing, I think those speeches are extraordinary.

I listened to them.

At that moment in the Cold War, they redefined what the Cold War is about, and they redefined U.S.-Soviet relations.

So I think those speeches deserve attention as well.

I would put Johnson's Voting Rights Act, the worst public speaker of all time, in my opinion.

We shall overcome.

When he articulates that in that speech, Martin Luther King says it brings tears.
