So he was the first kind of licensed black physician, and therefore he was really powerful.
So I ended up living with a local black family, working in this clinic, and really beginning to understand what it was like to be in a place that still had a lot of discrimination and how that affected their health care.
And it was an amazing experience.

which is where the really exotic and interesting and new diseases appear, and actually had an opportunity to travel around the world, find interesting diseases, including novel ones where I got to discover a new disease and actually name it.
So it was a really extraordinary experience and helped build up the type of skills that I was able to use later on.
