And in true civil service fashion, a committee was set up.
But the remit was really to look at all the problems which would occur if and when women went to the Antarctic.
Well, the chair of the committee was a very distinguished biologist who specialised in elephant seals.
And at one stage, I have to admit, he did sit me down, look me straight in the eye and say, well, look, Liz, what you have to understand is that men are like elephant seals.
And there was a pause while I looked at him and he looked at me.
And he said, they'll fight.
They'll fight for their harem.

What did you say?
I was flabbergasted.
I didn't know what to say.
I think I probably ended up by saying, but I don't think men are like elephant seals.
My job on that committee turned into reassuring everybody that actually in the climbing community, for example, which I was part of, nobody would
be creating a fuss about a man and a woman sharing a tent if they were going climbing together, for example, so that their ideas of what was proper were perhaps a little old-fashioned.
