They are profoundly important, as you can imagine.
And this is what we call a very active rescue phase.
What's been very heartening to see is there is a response from the international community.
And we can see that the interim president, Rodriguez, is welcoming in that support, which is actually very important.
And we may see this phase last for two to three weeks.
Yes, very sadly.
In earthquakes, you survey the horror and you kind of step back and then the sights and the scenes tend to reveal themselves.
There's a couple of very difficult factors here.
It's the capital of Venezuela, it's Caracas, so it's highly built up.
And then the second aspect is you've actually seen two very powerful earthquakes, one after the other.
So we see people go out into the streets to see what's happened and then they are hit by the masonry in the buildings of the second earthquake.
It is.
One of the things that gives me hope is this is an area of international consistency.
It's something you can train to a standard around the world.
It's very interesting seeing the teams already going from all corners of the earth heading to help.
There is things that can be done, but sometimes one of the awful things for responders is they get there.
As you say, they can hear the voices, but there's very limited things they can do.
we've come a long way in search and rescue but rightly so we also know that we have to protect those rescuers from from further harm so it's a really difficult period um and there's lots of people can do if they're not uh able to go and help in the search and rescue
What we find is the humanitarian effort for things like earthquakes is so expensive.
There probably will be something like an international funding campaign.
