And then Claudius adopted Nero, and he got a new name, which is why we call him Nero, because he's called Nero Claudius Caesar Drusus Germanicus, right?
For short.
In due course, there is a problem there.
You know, it all looks great for Nero, in a way, because he's the descendant of Augustus through his mum.
He's the adopted son of the reigning emperor.
Looks super.
The problem is that the reigning emperor's already got his own son.
And he's called Britannicus.
Call that to celebrate Claudius's conquest of Britain.
Names his son specially.
The story is that Agrippina started to engineer Britannicus being marginalised, right?
And Claudius does die.
I was using it slightly euphemistically.
Claudius dies and the allegations are that he was poisoned by mushrooms.
Yeah.
He's at dinner and he's eating his favourite mushroom omelette or whatever it is.
The idea is that the mushrooms are actually poisoned mushrooms, or that Agrippina had put poison on the mushrooms.
That is the story.
