Well as you might expect, the ones who become violent are the long term stalkers.
About fifty percent of stalkers are the brief harassers and about fifty percent are the long term real problems.
About ten percent have a serious mental disorder.
Though they don't have serious mental illness, very few people who stalk are exactly well balanced individuals.
They tend to be people who have difficulty with relationships, either the rather inadequate, shy, dependent types, or they tend to be the sort of arrogant, demanding individuals very sensitive to their own rights and insensitive to the rights and prerogatives of others.

All different stalkers can sometimes convince those around them uh that in fact uh their beliefs are correct.
So we had one odd young man who'd become quite convinced that someone he really had no connection with whatsoever uh would be his future bride, that they were destined uh for each other, that uh he loved her so naturally she must love him.
The family were always worried about this young man.
They thought he'd never find anyone.
He'd never really uh managed to find a girlfriend, and they were so delighted when he told them that uh he was engaged to be married, uh that they arranged the wedding, and they even went round uh with this young man to serenade uh the girl he was to marry.
They all stood outside of a house, the whole family.
It was quite a large family actually, uh singing and and bringing gifts.
Gifts which was somewhat distressing to the poor girl who really didn't know who this bloke was other than he was a strange man who'd been following her and sending her unwanted bunches of flowers.
We now live in a society of serial monogamy.
People would move in and out of relationships, particularly in their teens and twenties.
And every time any intimate relationship of any seriousness ends, there's a risk that one partner is going to be really very upset about this.
And that then, if they have the right or the wrong characteristics, may lead to stalking.
