They are bad.
Air pollution has a significant impact on all respiratory diseases.
It can cause COPD.
It can make things worse.
There was a nice study.
They took a bunch of people walking down Oxford Street.
And they measured various things, including all the noxious gases.
And they measured their lung function and their inflammation.
And their lung function got worse and inflammation went up.
They got the same people and carried on and walked down Hyde Park.
and very markedly less effect of a two-mile walk along Hyde Park than down Oxford Street.
So people with asthma, significantly impaired by lung pollution.
Exactly.
And it takes us, and I think you touched on this earlier, in terms of
the sort of socio-economic impact of pollution and who gets it and who gets other issues, damp in the house, who has higher incidences of smoking or vaping.
There's clearly a big correlation.
If you live in your lovely house in the country or on Regent's Park, breathing fresh air, if you're in a little small flat with damp,
Next to a main road, you're getting diesel fumes, you've got mold.
And so there's a big link between your socioeconomic class, your wealth, and your respiratory disease.
