So you can imagine you get wheezy.

So that's asthma.

The third is obviously lung cancer.

Vast majority caused by smoking, but it can be caused by other things such as pollution, such as some industrial exposures.

obviously has such a high mortality if it presents very late and there are new treatments which really do improve the outcome that has changed dramatically over the last few years but also and especially in the UK is a big program now to find lung cancer before people have symptoms and now throughout the UK many people with a relatively significant smoking history will be offered a CT scan to try and identify

lung cancer before they get symptoms if you wait for coughing up blood or weight loss it's often fairly advanced whereas if you can find a small nodule and then remove it before it causes any problems then you can markedly improve survival and mortality is 20% better in people who undergo lung cancer screening than those who don't

So we'll talk about pollution.

It's important, isn't it?

I mean, pollution now, if you look outside, the air looks much cleaner.

If you were here in the 1940s, it'd be a pea super full of smog.

But even after the Clean Air Act in the 50s, there is still sort of invisible pollution.

We talk about these fine particles, PM2.5, which is 2.5 microns, which is tiny.

You could put 30 of those on a human hair.

So these are tiny, tiny things.

Across the width of a human hair.

Across the height of a human hair.

Well, it depends how long.
