So the arm starts going puffy.
You can feel an artery, but the veins start filling.
You let the tourniquet down and blood starts flowing back, showing this circulation coming from the heart, blood going from the heart and coming back to the heart.
So, well, you've got to think about oxygen.
We take oxygen for granted, don't we?
But previously they had no idea what oxygen was, what was in the air we breathe.
Priestley, you've heard of Priestley?
And he did a really nice experiment.
He got some, well, it's mercury oxide.
He didn't know it was mercury oxide, but it was a compound.
And he shone a bright light from a magnifying glass.
And he collected the gas that was formed.
And he did two things with that.
One, he gave it to a mouse, a mouse in a jar that wasn't feeling very well because it didn't have much air.
And suddenly, the mouse started running around.
And he also put it in another jar which had a weak flame, and the flame started burning much more brightly.
So it was obviously this life-giving gas that was being produced.
Now, it wasn't a Frenchman called Lavoisier who actually made the proper discovery of oxygen.
We don't want to say the French beat us to it, but I suppose the British... I'm actually getting a lot of credit in this podcast, I think correctly.
