This isn't what's happening here.

This is wannabe authoritarianism.

And sometimes they'll refer to that, but then on a day-to-day basis, they go back to the fact of, let's treat this as if this is just a standard process of politics within the system rather than an actual threat to it.

So it is initially, it's an attempt by the Trump folks to manipulate the electoral system.

They are concerned about these midterm congressional elections because the economy has serious problems, even before there were any Iran, which has made those problems worse.

They're in that war in Iran, which appears to have no end, at least from their point of view, with more than 70 percent of Americans now opposed to it.

Their immigration offensive has backfired because they went too far when they killed U.S.

citizens, when they were seen to rough up, to disappear, as well as detain asylum seekers, as well as migrants.

And so what do they do?

It's like, OK, maybe we can discourage mail-in voting.

Maybe we can even take steps to prevent mail-in voting.

Maybe we can make it harder to vote early.

Maybe we can make it harder to count those votes after they've been cast.

And of course, you have the redistricting, which has favored Republicans.

so that they can try to hold on to more seats in the House of Representatives.

But then what really worries me, Pat, is that this sets up the pretext to rig the elections or to overturn them, I should say, afterwards.

Back in 2020, after Trump lost in November, the White House went so far as to draft an executive order to seize voting machines.
