Yeah, so we were lucky that when we started doing this work, this would be the best part of 25 years ago, there were another group of people who really needed underwater sound, and that's synchronized swimming teams.
So these are the teams that you see at the Olympics that all emerge with their arms out at the same time.
They need to hear the sound of the music underwater to know how to keep time.
So these speakers are made for swimming pools originally, but we can wire them to floating barrels or into sound systems on the seabed and play back recordings that we've taken either back in time or at nearby healthy coral reefs to these areas that are degraded.
Yes, what we're trying to do is to call in the animals into actually very safe places for them to come and make home.
There's no predators.
There's no competition.
There's lots of available space and feeding opportunities.
And those animals start to colonize that area.
It's like new real estate that you can go and create your whole new village or your whole new city on top of.
By calling these animals in, they wouldn't find that area otherwise because sound is one of the cues they're using to pick where to live.
Once they're established, they start to grow, they start to breed, they start to make sound, and they start to call in the next generation.
So it's a window into their future that we're giving them an opportunity to experience.
This is what that reef could sound like if only they came and joined the party.
