Coming back to some of the more serious work that he has, th there's a a famous line with that with which he finishes Words don't sleep in your translation.
I wonder if you could read that poem on page one hundred and thirty five um from Learning Old Vocabulary and um I'd love to finish off with hearing that poem and and hearing your reflection on um translation and the ways that words aren't sleeping through your translation.
It's like a an artistic manifesto, this brilliant poem.
I I was um so struck when you were reading it just now with all of the verbs in it too.
Kick, play, carry, and then later on destroy, breathe, blue, um sold.
Um the in a in a certain sense the verbs itself are are doing something very similar on a on a level within the str in the structure of that poem.
But you were showing it to us, which is part of the demonstration of of translation as art.
Yeah.
Karen, as we began, you said that this is um a great honor for you and for Durz's work and also that it's a great uplifting of translation.
I wonder if you could talk a little bit about the importance of translation and why it is that that is something that you give so much of your time and energy and expertise and skill to, and why it is that we need more of it in the world.
Karen Lee, your translation of Doris Grunbein's uh book, Psyche Running, has won the twenty twenty five Griffin Prize for Poetry.
Congratulations to both of you and it's been a great pleasure to speak with you.
Karen Leder is a writer, scholar, and translator of contemporary German literature.
She has received many accolades for her translations, including the Griffin Poetry Prize for Psyche Running by Doris Grunbein.
She is the Schwartz Taylor Chair of the German language and literature at the University of Oxford.
