I'm Padraig O'Tooma and here I am in conversation with Kimberly Campanello.

We are recording on Emily Dickinson's birthday.

She is 194 today.

Kimberly, you and I met a number of years ago in Belfast, because while you've been living in England for a long time and been based there, a lot of your work has centered on matters to do with Irish literature, and especially then the St.

Mary's mother and baby home in Tuam in County Galway.

And so you've been a frequent, you know, reader and scholar in various places in Ireland.

The St.

Mary's mother and baby home was run by the Order of Nuns, the Bon Secours sisters.

And there are death records, but not burial records, for 796 infants and children who died in that home between 1926 and 1961.

And

Some of those were unearthed and there was kind of shockwaves went through Ireland.

People spoke about it as this experience of national grief and subsequent governmental investigations were deemed inadequate and people were upset, understandably.

And then this question as to where the remains of these poor children are now.

And Catherine Corliss is the local historian with whom you worked and with whom you collaborated.

And then you wrote a piece called Mother Baby Home, all one word, all caps, and which is almost like an accusation, the way that that word stands there.

And that has 796 pages.
