If you haven't heard it by going to church, you've heard it at the cemetery.
Because this text is read at almost every funeral.
In America.
Let not your hearts be troubled.
He doesn't just come out on the stage and say, here's the beginning of my talk.
Let not your hearts be troubled.
As I said, there is a context to those words.
Those words of exhortation take place in the midst of a very poignant discussion that Jesus is having with his friends.
And to understand, I think, the thrust of his teaching, I'll just call your attention to the twenty first verse of John, chapter thirteen, where it says this after he had said this, Jesus.
Was troubled.
In his own spirit.
That interesting.
That Thesus is not standing there aloof as the preacher admonishing his congregation.
No, I don't want you all to be troubled.
But he is speaking about their being troubled out of the midst of his own trouble.
In chapter thirteen we said that Jesus began to be troubled.
Well what was it was troubling him?
He was troubled in his spirit and he said, I tell you the truth for
One of you is going to betray me.
