And then explain that in order to do all of that, you want to talk about working the hours where you would be most productive and most successful.
You don't want to come with like an ultimatum or a ton of demands.
You're treating this as a conversation between you and your manager.
You're asking them for feedback, what they think of this, what ideas they have.
So you're really setting the tone from the start that this is a conversation.
One of the things she did was she looked really carefully at her time.
She started mapping out how much time she was spending on various tasks.
That gave her the ability to really think through this in a tactical way.
She also piloted at first using her vacation time.
And starting out as a trial period is something I heard from a lot of people.
Four months, six months, it gives everyone a chance to work out the kinks and get used to the arrangement.
It can help bosses feel comfortable with it.
And again, for her, this idea of kind of time blocking and paying a lot of attention to how efficient she was being, how much time it took her to do things, that enabled her to give people really accurate estimates of how much work she could get done.
That really enabled her to gain the trust of her bosses and her colleagues.
I don't think that this is a panacea.
That being said, I think it can be a really great tool for some people.
It can give people somewhat of a sense of balance.
Again, it doesn't mean that this is going to be the cure for everyone or that it's going to kind of make your life perfect with the snap of your fingers, but it's definitely something worth looking into for a lot of folks.

I was surprised to find people who kind of did everything right, who I thought had great tips on how to ask, and they still heard no.
