So we are told in the Torah when it talks about what we're going to be doing on the 10th of the seventh month, it actually uses the word Inui.
Inui is translated as afflict.
The Mishnah, the oral law, explains that what we're really doing on Yom Kippur is we're trying to disregard our physical needs because we're trying to elevate.
ourselves.
So it's not that we're trying to deprive ourselves, but Rambam suggests, uh, Rabbi Moses Maimonides suggests that once a year we try to aspire to transcend normal human limitations.
And we try to be almost like celestial beings, closer to this idea of God, and we elevate ourselves, but it is hard.
And so we don't do these things that sort of like human beings.
Need to eat and drink.
And oh, we want to shower and we want to, you know, put on oils or face cream or what have you.
No, celestial, sort of like high, elevated spiritual beings don't worry about that stuff.
But something that I think is interesting, by the way, is that in the Torah, when we have the story of Moses going back up onto Mount Sinai after the Jewish
People have been caught praying to an idol that they've constructed of a golden calf.
And that's a huge betrayal of God at the time.
When Moses is up on Mount Sinai for 40 days begging forgiveness and trying to, you know, renegotiate things with God.
And the people in his absence, in Moses' absence, take it upon themselves to really do severe introspective.
And say, what is it that made us do this thing that was so egregious?
