That we go into Shmenyatzeret with.

And what happens is Shmenyyatzeret also coincides with when we finish the cycle of reading the Torah.

We have a tradition that we read a portion of Torah of the five books of Moses every Shabbat.

And different Torah readings are also on all of the different holidays.

And when we get to the day of Shmenyatzeret in Israel, in

the diasporates over two days.

Shminyatzerat is one day and Simhat Torah, the finishing of the Torah holiday is the following day.

And we immediately rule the entire Torah back to the very beginning.

And it's considered a very festive day because

The second that it happens, we roll it back.

Everyone watches it be rolled all the way from the end of Deuteronomy, the end of Devarium, to the very beginning of Breshita of Genesis.

And we read the first reading of in the beginning.

We start over immediately.

And there's something about that that is so powerful.

Alexander Strassfeld, Rabbi Alexander Strassfeld called that.

The deathlessness of the Jewish people, that this wovenness that we have to this blueprint for life is the deathlessness of the Jewish people.

And so there's something very layered and complicated and crushing and tragic that since October 7th, 2023, which occurred on that very same day, on the day of Simcha Torah.

That makes it very confusing and painful because now forever, in addition to this being the symbol of the deathlessness of the Jewish people, it is also now forever the Yortseit, the anniversary of the date of death for thousands of families to commemorate their children, their partners, their parents, their siblings, their loved ones.

And that is a challenge that I will certainly have for the rest of my life because even though Hirsch was not killed on October 7th, that part of my life ended on that day.

And there was very much a before and after.
