It's Persia, the next door neighbor of Babylonia.

And guess what?

It's the Purim story that you and I have learned together in March.

And King Cyrus, who was in charge of Persia, he has a different way of handling things.

communities that have been exiled, he actually encourages them to go back to where they've been exiled from because he thinks that will garner goodwill and that only good can come from people feeling good about where they are.

And so some of the Jewish community in Babylonia starts to go back to the land

of Israel and goes back to Jerusalem and starts rebuilding what becomes the second temple.

And it takes about 70 years, and it's not anywhere as beautiful initially as the first temple was.

But around, again, these are all around 516 BCE, you have the second temple that starts being active.

And there are lots of renovations that take place in that second temple.

supposedly it wasn't nearly as spiritually connected as the first temple, that there were things that happened in the first temple that did not happen in the second temple.

And yet it still was way more than anything you or I can imagine in today's world where we're so far removed from the sort of spiritual touchability.

But the second temple is up and running and good things are happening, maybe.

Yeah.

And then we get to the year 70 of the Common Era, and guess what?

Rome comes and conquers Jerusalem and destroys the Second Temple.

And again, we have this big question in the Talmud, why?

Why is this happening again?

And again, we hear, first of all, that the priestly leadership had been misbehaving, and even the military had been fighting, infighting with each other.

the priests who ran the temple were doing different things at a cost, at a price, like they were not above the temptations that befall most people.
