Even just having all of these days coming up, it can really consume you.
It can consume people.
And so I think that there's wisdom when the rabbis said, you know, this is a three-week period where there happened to have been a lot of really tangible, rough stuff that happened, right?
We're going to have some days that we acknowledge that and we do it in very profound ways.
You know, the observances that we do for the ninth of Av, there are two things that we do actively and then there are many things that we abstain from because we're trying to get us all in the mood of loss and mourning.
So...
One of the things that we do is we read the Book of Lamentations, which is one of the five Megilot, one of the five scrolls.
You and I have actually learned together about the other four scrolls.
The Book of Ruth, which we read on Shavuot.
The Book of Esther, which we read on Purim.
The Book of Ecclesiastes, which we read on Sukkot.
And the Book of Jonah, which we read in the afternoon on Yom Kippur.
And now...
For Tisha B'Av, we actually read this book of Lamentations, which is written by the prophet Jeremiah.
It is a very sad, it's only five chapters.
It's sung in a way that sounds like it's crying.
People sit on the floor, either at a synagogue or even a community center.
We had friends over and we all sat on the floor with candlelight and we read the book of Lamentations.
We also have a tradition of reading these poetic elegies that are very haunting that are called the keynote, K-I-N-O-T in English.
And those are elegies that have been written before.
