Even at the most happy moments in our lives, we know there's a shatteredness that is existing alongside of it.
So at Jewish weddings, we always shatter a glass at the end of the ceremony.
My rabbi who taught me about that years ago, Rabbi Zvi Wolf, always said,
make sure you have a real gap between when you shatter the glass and you shout Mazel Tov, because otherwise it sounds like you're celebrating the shatteredness, which you're trying not to.
You know, three times a day when we're praying, every single day, wrapped into the prescribed prayers that many people do, we talk about the destruction and the hopeful rebuilding, you know, in the future of our fractured community, in the grace after meals every day, in the Birkat Hamazon, we're mentioning it,
A lot of people who build a home will leave a little patch not painted in a corner of their home, usually near the door, to remind us that even as happy and wonderful and blessed as our life is, it's not complete and there is brokenness here.
The other thing that I think is important to mention, which you and I sort of talked about earlier, is this idea that there was so much sinach chinam, there was so much baseless hatred that could really be so destructive.
And Rabbi Avram Yitzchak Cook was the first chief rabbi of the
land of Israel in its modern incarnation before 1948, before it was even a state.
And he was this very special ultra-Orthodox rabbi that everybody commented.
He just had this true love and connection to everybody that he met.
He didn't care what you wore.
He didn't care...
what you did and didn't do.
He just sort of saw the specialness in the person in front of him.
And he was once asked around this time of year, you know, this is, we're coming up on the 9th of Av, it's such a time of destruction.
There's so much acrimony and distance between people.
What can we do
to heal and to repair.
Like, how can we repair all this baseless hatred that all of us have?
