It's hard because games also with differently wired kids could especially be very socially reinforcing.
So it's not just about playing a game and having fun.
It's about playing the game with their friends.
It's about this is their social time.
This is the time they're connecting with other people.
And so it's it's not quite the same as let's put your book down and go eat dinner.
Yeah, well I'm a research psychologist.
That's kind of the title I would adopt, I suppose.
And a gamer and a parent based in Austin, Texas.
I have a PhD in psychology from the University of York and a master's in counseling psychology from Santa Clara University.
And my interest really grew out of my masters program because with the masters in counseling psychology, you're required to do a clinical internship.
So I was doing individual therapy and family therapy and seeing a lot of parents come in with concerns about their children playing video games.
Now this was two thousand six to two thousand and eight, which was when World of Warcraft was super popular, which I'm sure many parents have heard of.

And after about the third, fourth parenting couple, I was like, okay, I play a lot of World of Warcraft.
I'm starting to be concerned.
Should I be concerned that something negative is happening because I'm playing these games?
But at the time, you know, game studies was not a field of research.
There was very little information for me to pass along to parents.
And so I thought this is something that I could research.
