Because of how Lukasz and Joanna met with them texting and meeting up at her place, they were able to connect him with Joanne.

And then again, as we know from earlier, they found his blood within her apartment.

Then again, as we know from earlier, John was the roommate of Joanne.

So that connection was quickly made there as well.
