But 17-year-old Ga-eun Choi of Korea overcame the odds and an early hard fall to land the highest score of the night.
Choi is the same age Chloe Kim was when she won her first Olympic gold in 2018 and has considered her a mentor for years.
Kim greeted Choi at the finish with a warm hug and a big smile.
She later said she is honored to have inspired the next generation.

As four-time Olympians and the reigning world champions three years running, Chalk and Bates were favored for gold.
But they fell short by just over a point, behind French skaters Guillaume Cizeron and Laurence Fournier-Baudry, who only teamed up last year.

and Japan battling most closely for gold.
Team USA led in the first two days, but sometimes by just one or two points.
and Japan headed into the final event, the men's free skate, locked in a tie.
In the end, it was Ilya Malinin's quad stacked program that propelled Team USA to the top of the podium for the second Olympics in a row.
